As an EV owner, for more than three years now, I still find myself reflecting on the benefits of my decision to make the switch. Running an agency that specialises in helping brands shape the future of mobility I made the transition fairly early. Choosing the Tesla 3 performance model, I can honestly say it’s one of the best decisions I've made, and I want to share the benefits I've experienced along the way. Whether you're considering making the switch or just curious about what it's like to own an electric vehicle, here are some of the advantages I've enjoyed.
Driving an electric vehicle is a unique experience. The instant torque provides quick acceleration (0-60mph in 3.1secs), making it a joy to drive. Living in The New Forest I quite often need the power (456 horses worth) to nip around farm vehicles and I’ve never felt safer to do so. It’s so quick, with no lag, its performance makes the manoeuvres effortless. I love the smooth and quiet ride too, which adds to the overall comfort. Plus, regenerative braking helps extend the vehicle’s range while reducing wear on the brake pads. I often find myself enjoying the drive more than I ever did in any of my previous cars.
EVs are often at the forefront of automotive technology. From advanced infotainment systems to cutting-edge safety features, my Tesla is packed with innovations that are intuitive and enhance my driving experience. For me, the driver-assistance features help make driving safer and more enjoyable too. Regular software updates mean my car gets better over time, much like a smartphone. And I don’t need to go anywhere near a garage!
One of the most convenient aspects of owning an EV is the ability to charge at home. Instead of making regular trips to the petrol station, I can plug in my vehicle overnight while I sleep. This means I wake up to a fully charged car each morning, ready for the day ahead. I’m also lucky enough to have the ability to charge at work, so it really is super convenient. I appreciate home and work charging aren’t available to all, but there are many more who could have both available that haven’t yet made the switch. The public charging network is constantly improving too, so long road trips are no longer hassle. On the rare occasion I actually drive more than 300 miles in one journey, I plug in, grab a coffee, sandwich and comfort break and by then have enough charge to get back on the road – with no need to drive through and stop at the petrol pump to fill up, reducing my overall journey time! Many apps help locate charging stations along the way, making long-distance travel a breeze.
Being part of the EV community has also been a rewarding experience. There’s a strong sense of camaraderie among fellow EV owners, whether it’s sharing tips on charging or discussing the latest models. This has lessened as more have already made the switch, so less curiosity, but I love the thought of helping people make their own decision through conversations I’ve had about the many positive benefits of ownership.
Whilst the primary reason for some, the positive impact on the environment wasn’t my main consideration. However, knowing EVs produce zero emissions, which means I'm contributing to cleaner air and a healthier planet certainly come more to the fore as I’m driving past the New Forest ponies with their foals stood at the side of the road. With climate change being a pressing issue, it feels empowering to play a small part in reducing my carbon footprint. Plus, many EVs can be charged using renewable energy sources, further enhancing their eco-friendly credentials.
With the global shift towards electrification and sustainability, owning an EV feels like a smart move for the future. As more cities implement low-emission zones, I feel secure knowing that my electric vehicle is a forward-thinking choice. The ongoing advancements in battery technology and charging infrastructure make me confident that EV ownership will only become more advantageous.
Owning an electric vehicle has transformed my driving experience in countless ways. From environmental benefits to innovative technology and a supportive community, I can confidently say that being an EV owner is a fulfilling choice. If you’re considering making the switch, I encourage you to explore the possibilities and embrace the electric lifestyle. It’s not just about driving; it’s about being part of a movement towards a cleaner, more sustainable future.
And 91% of those have made the switch – will never go back – including myself.
